Craig Sager 1951-2016
I've watched NBA basketball since I was a child and ever since then it became an obsession. An obsession to memorize names and stats; "Here's that player, he plays for that team." or "This coach is leading this team to victory because of this." or even "There goes that reporter getting the usual harsh interview by coach Pop [Greg Popovich, head coach for the San Antonio Spurs]." Yet throughout all of those years of watching NBA basketball, no reporter stuck out more in memory than Craig Sager.
It's easy to see why Craig Sager sticks out from the crowd; he was always the reporter with the funky suit with the loud and vibrant colors. Always drawing attention with the eye, and having players and coaches poke fun at him and his suit. However, what really made him stand out was his determination to give 100% no matter the obstacle. Craig Sager was diagnosed with leukemia in 2014 and yet didn't allow this to affect his performance whenever he stepped on the sidelines to report. Craig led with passion, heart, determination, and perseverance. He showed us that life must be lived to it's fullest potential, and that no matter what it is you may be going through you must do what you love and love what you do. I wish I could say that I followed his career all the way through, but I'd be lying if I didn't say that he was always just the guy with the funky suits. Unfortunately he truly didn't get the recognition he deserved until the news of his diagnosis. Consequently, that is why he deserves this tribute and all other tributes to come. The sheer notion that life can change in an instant is enough to pay homage to one of the greatest reporters of all time. One that many took for granted and only saw him for his suits. But one that also has inspired many with his strengh to move forward. Craig Sager has inspired me to continue to write this blog and to keep informing you with whatever style I wish, because at the end of the day, if you can't be yourself like Craig was with his suits and his style of reporting, it just isn't appreciating life itself.
